Emergency Preparedness

Build a Kit

Emergency Preparedness involves the actions you take before, during and after an emergency or natural disaster.

Most people focus on one specific type of event when they think of potential disasters for our area, but there are a variety of reasons you could need to access supplies in your emergency kit: urban wildfire; flooding; severe weather and power outage; pandemic: earthquake; tornado; even heavy traffic that strands you on the roadway for several hours.

What do you need and where do you start?

  1. Learn the Hazards near where you work, play, and live.
  2. Have a Household Emergency Plan – decide where your meeting locations are and who will be your out-of-area contact. This plan is simple, easy to complete, and allows you to expand the information as you need. When you are finished, you can enter your email address and send yourself a printed copy.
  3. Build Out Your Emergency Kits. Don't let this be overwhelming! You use the same type of items in each kit, it's just a matter of scale.
    • Home: ideally two weeks’ worth of supplies
    • Go-Bag: three to four days’ worth of supplies
    • Vehicle: 24 to 36 hours

Preparedness Tips Especially for Seniors

CRESA was pleased to partner with the Commission on Aging in 2024 to focus on what emergency preparedness means for the senior community. Here are some lessons learned from that collaboration.

Prepare Your Pets

If you are like millions of animal owners nationwide, your pet is an important member of your household. Unfortunately, animals are also affected by disaster.

Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as assembling an animal emergency supply kit and developing a pet care buddy system, are the same for any emergency. Whether you decide to stay put in an emergency or evacuate to a safer location, you will need to make plans for your pets. Keep in mind that what's best for you is typically what's best for your animals. Helpful information for planning for your pets is available here
