In September 2024, Kim answered a 911 call from a distressed mother who said, "Oh my gosh, I just had my baby in the toilet… 26 weeks only.”

Kim quickly confirmed the baby was still in the toilet and advised the mom to carefully remove the baby. Determining that the baby was blue but moving slightly, Kim followed the “Baby Not Breathing” protocol. She instructed the mother to gently wipe the baby’s mouth and nose, then to vigorously dry the baby with a clean towel for 30 seconds to stimulate breathing.

The mother reported the baby had started breathing, and Kim guided her to continue drying and wrapping the baby while confirming the placenta had been delivered. Kim monitored the situation, ensuring the door was unlocked and checking that the mother was not bleeding heavily.

Six minutes into the call, a Vancouver Police Department officer arrived to provide care, and EMS followed shortly after. Thanks to Kim’s calm and clear instructions, the baby boy survived and was admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit.

For her quick thinking and life-saving guidance, Kim has been recognized with the Stork Award.

Congratulations Kim and to the new mother!
